How do I get control of my business and personal finances?
When I first started my business, I was all over the place. The most embarrassing thing about it was the fact that I was a CPA. I should be able to get this…right? What was wrong with me? Why could I not get it?
The first step you need to take is getting a grip on your finances right now. Make the commitment to yourself and gather all the information you will need. If you need help, ask for it, whether you ask a friend, relative, spouse of professional. Ask for help. There is no need to do this alone.
Sometimes I feel so overwhelmed by my finances and I don’t even want to look at them. Where do I start?
- Have a specific place you pay the bills.
- Make sure you have all the items you will need to take care of everything in one sitting - If you have to get up to get something, chances are you will find another project to take your attention and the bills will not get paid.
- Clear the space – You do not want it messy; that just adds to the confusion.
- Select a day and time each week to pay your bills – If you put it on your calendar, you are more likely to keep the time carved out for that particular task. If you try to squeeze it in somewhere else, it is much less likely to happen.
- Create a checklist - This way, you make sure you take care of all the things you need to do at one time. Things like paying bills are obvious. However, something you might forget to do is transfer money to savings or donate to your favorite charity.
Sometimes people get overwhelmed with just the thought of really looking at themselves in the mirror (because that is what you are really doing). Don’t. Just take it one step at a time. Think of this as your first step on your road to wealth and freedom! Try the following steps below to take the headache out of your finances:
I am trying to do my bookkeeping myself to save money, but it is hard to keep up.
The first step is to get organized! Once you get all your numbers in place, don’t just look at them. That will not help you one bit. You need to actually understand what the numbers mean. There are people out there that can help.
Every mompreneur should make the commitment to learn and understand how the financial side of their business works. That way, they can run their company with purpose, passion and a solid foundation of knowledge. How good will that feel?
It seems like there is always some expense I need to pay for in my business, how do I get ahead?
If you have money flying in and out of your business and you do not know where it is going, chances are you are wasting your money on things that do not work. Have you ever analyzed that $500 per month advertising you have been doing? Imagine you found out your return on investment was negligible? You cancel your commitment with them. Now you have an extra $500 per month!
If you do not know where your money is going or how to understand the financials, you are not able to wade through the numbers and really see what is and is not working for you.
Should I follow my head or my heart when it comes to making business decisions?
Recently I decided to completely eliminate a particular line of my business I had been holding on to for years just because I thought it was “making me so much money”. I was torn between what my heart knew was right, and what made financial sense. I did not know what to do. As I was sitting quietly with myself, trying to figure everything out, I heard my father’s voice in the back of my head. “Take money out of the equation. Then make your decision.” Once I did that, my decision was as clear as day. I was a little nervous, but I knew my heart would not steer me wrong.
I can honestly say, that is how I try to make all my decisions now. If I am really struggling with what is right, I stop and see if money is the largest factor. If it is, I take it out of the equation and follow my heart. Life is much easier that way. Try taking the money out of the equation and trusting your feelings and instincts.
I don’t feel like I have a long range financial plan for myself or my family, and that scares me.
So many mompreneurs I meet are so caught up in the day to day running of their business, they never really stop to think about where they want to go. How can you get there if you do not know where you are going? Think about what you really want from your business. Do you have dreams of it running itself someday, while you spend your summer on the beach in Hawaii with your husband and children? Do you want to have your spouse help you run your business? Do you have an exit strategy planned out in case you want to sell when you get to a certain point?
These are all very important to the running of your business. Once you have them lined out, you will be able to create steps, doable steps, to get there. Suddenly, everything does not seem so overwhelming.
I know I need to get help with my finances, but I don’t know if I can afford to. What do I do?
Whether it is cutting loose particular lines of your business that were weighing you down or cutting out dead weight expenses, you need to see a clear path to go down. I have information that can help. The first step is getting information. Next, get organized. If you need help in this process, let me know!
